5 Palettes for the Perfect Smokey Summer Eye | Drugstore Dupes and Pricing Comps

It's almost July, which makes it the perfect time of year to bring those warm-toned shades out and smoke em' out. We all know the trend I'm talking about because it is all over Instagram and in the beauty community because, well, it truly is a stunning look for any skin tone. This post is going to consist of some of the best palettes for the perfect sunset summer smokey eye from the high-end spectrum and the best dupes out there in the drugstore range.

☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀☀

1.) URBAN DECAY NAKED HEAT PALETTE, $54 USD

This palette has been one of the most talked about this season since its' reveal a few weeks back. This palette has 12-pans each containing .05 oz of product per pan. A lot of palettes only contain 0.02 oz, so this is quite a bit of product. These matte and shimmer shades are a go-to for that summer eye with the rich siennas, warm browns, deep burnt oranges, and plums it features. Take a look:

I'm sure most of you have seen this if you have even the slightest interest in eyeshadow palettes, but it never hurts seeing a beauty like this twice (or a hundred times). I should be receiving mine in the mail any day now, so be on the look out for a review of this coming soon.

This product will be releasing officially on June 30th on Urban Decay's website, then will be online at Sephora and Ulta on July 10th. The palette will be in stores officially on July 13th.

DRUGSTORE DUPE

These share several almost identical shades, especially in the first row of this palette. It contains 16-pans, each with 0.02 oz each for less than $20 with a (as of today) 4.5 star review. It shares a mix of matte and summers with the warm-toned oranges, browns, and the rich red-brown shimmers. Compared to Naked Heat, there is only one purple-red/plum shade in the second column, but contains darker browns that Heat does not. These swatched beautifully in the store, so I do plan on going back to purchase this to get side-by-side comparison swatches.

2.) ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS MODERN RENAISSANCE, $42 USD

This palette has been around for quite some time and has definitely made its' way into the cult-favorites list. It was really the first of its' kind to begin the deep red, purple, and pink look with a few beautiful burnt oranges thrown in between for the perfect transition shades.

Not only is this palette talked about heavily around Valentine's day, but the oranges and red-toned browns make this a gorgeous sunset smokey go-to for any night or day look. It features mattes and shimmers with purple tones in the upper 7 pans and warmer, red/oranges and berry tones in the bottom 7. Each pan has 0.02 oz of product.

DRUGSTORE DUPES

I have two dupes for this palette, one that has very similar shade ranges but contains over twice as many pans and a dupe that is almost identical to the original for less than half of the price.

A little side-by-side comparison here shows how great of a dupe this MUR palette is, especially since it has double the pan count and is half the price of Modern Renaissance. The pan sizes are the same as ABH at 0.02 with 32 shades of mattes, shimmers, and satins. Currently, this product has a 4.3 star review at Ulta Beauty.

If I could describe a near-perfect dupe, this palette and Modern Renaissance would be the first to come to mind. These shades are almost identical, and I would probably put this at a 97% similarity to the original. The only difference is the shade in the bottom right corner "night out" is not a color in MR. It has 15 pans and the net weight of the product is unknown, so I won't be able to do a price comparison for this product.

3.) NARSissist LOADED EYESHADOW PALETTE, $59 USD

PC: Beautezine
NARS' limited edition NARSissist palette launched earlier this spring and so many were a huge fan of the golden, warm-toned brown versatile shades. Currently, this palette holds a 4.7 star rating on Sephora and is actually one of the highest rated. While including creamy mattes for a smoked out look, it includes a few shimmers in copper, pewter, and bronze tones to really build it up even more. Weighing in at 0.04 oz per pan, this 12-pan palette give you a total net product weight of 0.48 oz.

DRUGSTORE DUPE

Finding a dupe for this palette was tough, so this is not a perfect match. However, it did have a few shades that had a super close resemblance, especially the copper shades in the bottom row. This palette has more gold and red shades, but contains 16 pans instead of 12. It's missing the dark brown shade in the bottom row of NARSissit, but has a slightly warmer, lighter brown instead. Additionally NARS has a matte black, while this palette has a shimmery black. This palette currently has a 4.7 star rating.

4.) SMASHBOX COVER SHOT: EYE PALETTES - ABLAZE, $29 USD

When this palette first launched earlier this year, this palette was sold out in every Sephora or Ulta I went to - it was crazy but we all know why. Out of the 6 other palettes in this campaign, this one had those warm toned browns, sienna and berry shades that we all wanted. Plus, that rust color on the right side is the perfect summer smoking shade. It has just enough versatility to make several different looks with only 8 shades, with coordinated berry tones on one side and orange/brown tones on the other. Also, the external packaging is gorgeous with a shifting holographic picture of red smoke and fire.

DRUGSTORE DUPES

With the same berry and burnt orange tones, this palette is a sure dupe. According to the description, this palette has "super pigmented shades perfect for creating a dark smokey look" It has a few extra shades with 10 pans instead of 8, including a shimmer pale dusty mauve and an extra pale transition or base shade. It's currently sitting at 4.0 stars exclusively on Ulta, so not too shabby for only 8 bucks.

DUPE: MORPHE 12NB - NATURAL BEAUTY PALETTE - PICK ME UP COLLECTION, $14.99

While this palette isn't a perfect dupe, it's a great travel size palette with beautiful warm siennas, burnt oranges, and a select few red/berry tones.
There's mix of shimmers and mattes for a perfect warm smokey look, or even just for a warm daytime orange. The only issue I have with his palette is that there are so many light transition shades that some of them will not be useful for some skin tones. It has more shades than the original with 12 pans for a product net weight of 0.67 oz.

5.) NATASHA DENONA SUNSET EYESHADOW PALETTE, $129 USD

Since its' launch, the limited edition Sunset Palette has blown up in the beauty community because of the unique and super pigmented quality of these 15 shades. It has everything you need for the trending orange and red smokey eye with duo chrome, metallic, and matte shades. It also has a few berry shades mixed in amongst the burnt oranges, coppers, warm browns, and bronzes. Just like all of Natasha Denona's palette, you really are paying for the quality of these shades because they're so creamy and blend like a dream. I just want to note that this may seem like a steep price, but if you were to buy these separately they would range from $25-29 a piece. In this palette, you're only looking at $10.75 per shadow (about $250 in savings).

This recently released ColourPop palette shares some of the most iconic shades from the sunset palette: the mustard yellow, the bright brick red, the deep red-toned brown. ColourPop is known for its' quality formula for an affordable price, so when this palette launched it was a huge blow up. It has 12 shades, and just like the Sunset palette, a mix of metallics, duo chromes, and matte shades.  These shades are a bit smaller than the individual pressed powder shadows (0.02 vs 0.05 oz, respectively), but they have the same creamy and pigmented formulas. Currently this palette is out of stock, but it will be available again soon!

Alright, glow-getters. These are some of the best palettes I could find out there to create that beautiful warm smokey eye we're all going to be going for on these summer nights. I'd love to hear which ones you've tried or want to try, plus your thoughts on the dupes! Happy Sunday!

  1. You've done some pretty solid research with these dupes! I'd never heard of Beauty Creations Cosmetics before. I wonder if their quality is the same as the ABH ones?

    1. Thank you! I've heard that they're pretty comparable to the formula of ABH in what I've read, but personally I've never purchased this from them. I'll have to try them out soon because they have some pretty great prices (hopefully good quality?)! XO

  2. The NYX Warm Neutrals palette is surprisingly similar to the Naked Heat Palette! I've seem them individually and I never thought about how similar the shades are. Added another thing to my "to buy" list! xx

  4. I have Morphe 12NB and it is a great one to have. I am looking forward to hopefully getting the new UD Naked Heat palette. Out of all of the palettes you listed, which is your fave?

    1. The 12NB is definitely great and super convenient. If you like the 12NB, you're going to love the Heat palette. My review will be going up this weekend, so keep an eye out if you're interested! If you have any of the Naked palettes, the formula is very comparable to those. I'd have to say the Heat or the Sunset palette are my two favorites; I love the formulas and they have so much versatility. Thanks for the comment! XO
